DC motors are classified into two main categories based on the field excitation method.
1. Separately excited DC motors
2. Self-excited DC motors
1. Separately excited DC Generators
When the field winding is excited by a separate DC Supply or external DC Source, the motor is called a Separately excited DC motor.
2. Self-excited DC Motors
In Self-excited DC motors, the field winding is not excited by a separate DC Supply or external DC Source but the induced voltage in the armature itself will excite the field winding of the dc motor. According to the connection of the field winding with the armature Self-excited DC Generators are classified into 3 types.
I) Self-excited DC Series Motors
II) Self-excited DC Shunt Motors
III) Self-excited DC Compound Motors
