DC Generators are classified into two main categories based on the field excitation method.
1. Separately excited DC Generators
2. Self-excited DC Generators
1. Separately excited DC Generators
When the field winding is excited by a separate DC Supply or external DC Source then the generator is called a Separately excited DC generator.
2. Self-excited DC Generators
In Self-excited DC Generators, the field winding is not excited by a separate DC Supply or external DC Source but the induced voltage in the armature itself will excite the field winding of the dc generator. According to the connection of the field winding with the armature Self-excited DC Generators are classified into 3 types.
I) Self-excited DC Series Generators
II) Self-excited DC Shunt Generators
III) Self-excited DC Compound Generators
